In order for a business to be successful, it needs to be innovative. This means that it needs to come up with new and better ideas than its competitors. This can be done by having a strong R&D team that is constantly coming up with new ideas.

Leaders are usually the ones who come up with new ideas. They lead by example come up with innovative products or services that can make their business successful. It is not enough to simply have an R&D team, if it does not work together as a unit then they risk coming up with bad ideas that will only decrease the success of their business

Follower businesses base their success on what others do and create. They will only come up with new ideas if the leader has invented something innovative that they can add to their products or services. This is why it is important for a follower business to always be aware of what the leader is doing because that will ultimately affect how successful the follower business is.

Let's look at an example.

One of the world leaders in technology is Apple. They have come up with many innovative products that have helped them to grow their market share and achieve massive success. An example would be their Apple watch, this was an innovative product compared to other smartwatches available on the market at the time because it was the first to feature a screen that covered almost all of the watch face.

Another example would be Samsung, a follower who has been trying to catch up with Apple since they came out with the first smartwatch. They have come up with a lot of innovative products themselves in order for them to try and gain more market share from Apple's success, however many were not as successful as their competitors because they just simply copied Apple's ideas.

One of the main reasons why follower businesses do not succeed is because they are too busy copying what leaders have already done. They feel that doing this will increase their market share and put them above other followers in the market, but it does not work like this. If a leader comes up with something innovative, then it will distinguish them as a leader and the follower business who copied that idea will only be seen as a follower, this is why followers rely on leaders to come up with new ideas.
