Although clearly leading the industry for innovative design and product excellence, McAlpine had become stuck and didn't know what to develop next.
Keen to avoid the organisation becoming complacent, McAlpine decided to reach out to Innovolo to help.
McAlpine wanted to explore the new product ideas being generated by its sales team, inviting members of their design and manufacturing teams to co-create a list of potential products that could be developed for new and existing markets.
How We Helped
Innovolo provided McAlpine Plumbing Products with a 2-hour ideation workshop, hosted remotely for 12 sales team members over the course of one evening. The key was that the event gave all participants moment-by-moment feedback on their ideas, with the opportunity to learn from each other. McAlpine had previously hosted face-to-face workshops that struggled to engage all participants equally and provide that level of support.
McAlpine was particularly keen on the structured approach that Innovolo applied in the session, which helped them to easily filter out less-promising ideas after the session so they could focus on the most promising ones.
The result was that McAlpine came away with over 40 tangible new product ideas, giving them a significant head start in their R&D strategy for 2020-2025. Innovolo is now providing an ongoing ideation programme to ensure that this innovative culture remains embedded in the organisation.
The business benefits of this approach were significant for McAlpine. Within a few months, the company had successfully launched several new products that it previously considered beyond its capability.
