Conceptual Product Design

You’ve got a killer idea, you believe you know how to make it happen. But first, it needs to be teased out and brought into the world, so close your eyes, open your mind, and let us handle the rest. At first, good ideas are completely naked. At second, they’re barely clothed in words. And it takes our techniques to put the clothes on that give them their initial value. Conceptualisation explores options to combine the style, functionality, and ergonomics of your invention to produce a product design that will look, feel, and function just as you intend. This is the all-important first phase where we’ll take your general concept and make it awesome. We’ll give you several route options and spend time exploring all the features, functions, shapes, and construction. We recommend at least two to three different concepts. The more ideas, the better.

In aviation terms, we like to think of this as taking the plane up to 30,000 feet and looking at your product idea from above. We’ll be looking at the manufacturing process holistically (as opposed to in bits and pieces) so we can ensure your product is harmonious from the beginning to end.

Concept Design Service Deliverables include:

2D sketches

A product can be anything from a new app to a pair of shoes. A concept design is the first step in bringing that product to life. By sketching out a 2D design, you can get a better sense of the product and how it will come together. This can be especially helpful when working with complex products or trying to visualize an idea. In addition, a 2D sketch can help you spot potential problems with the product and make necessary changes before going any further in the design process. Whether you're a product designer, engineer, or simply someone with a great idea, 2D sketches can be a valuable tool in bringing your concepts to life.

A mood board

When designing a product, it is important to establish a clear style and tone that will set the product apart from the competition. This process often starts with the creation of a mood board, which is a collection of images, colours, patterns, and other visual elements that are used to help capture the look and feel of the product. By carefully considering each element on the mood board, designers can infuse their product with a distinct aesthetic that speaks to their target audience. Whether it's bold pops of colour or understated textures and patterns, a carefully crafted mood board helps to ensure that your product leaves an impression on customers and stands out in a crowded marketplace.

A specification sheet

A product specification sheet is a document that outlines all the materials, dimensions, colours, and other important details that will be used in the product design. This sheet is essential for ensuring that the product meets all the necessary requirements and is able to be manufactured correctly. The specification sheet also allows designers to communicate their ideas clearly to other members of the team, such as engineers or marketing staff. For example, if a designer wants to create a product with a particular finish, they would need to specify the type of paint or coating that should be used. Without this level of detail, it would be very difficult to produce the product accurately. In short, a specification sheet is an essential tool for any product designer.

3D renderings

When you are designing a product, having a clear and accurate representation of how it will look and work in real life is essential. Whether you are creating a cutting-edge piece of technology or simply designing the packaging for your latest product, a three-dimensional rendering can help to give you a better sense of what the final product will look like. Unlike flat sketches or 2D schematics, 3D renderings allow you to see the product from all angles, giving you a much more intuitive understanding of its form and function. Additionally, this type of view can also help to identify potential issues or design flaws early on in the product development process, saving time and resources in the long run. With all of these benefits in mind, it is clear that using 3D renderings in product design is an essential tool for designers everywhere.

CAD drawings

CAD drawings are an essential part of product design and manufacturing. These technical drawings are created using specialized computer software, and they contain all of the information needed to build your product. Whether you're developing a new piece of technology or a simple household item, the CAD drawings will be used by engineers, manufacturers, and other professionals to ensure that each step in the production process is carried out accurately and efficiently. In addition to providing detailed instructions for every aspect of the design and fabrication process, these drawings often also include concept sketches or other research materials that serve as reference points during development. Overall, CAD drawings are instrumental in ensuring that your product turns out exactly how you envisioned it.

3D printed models

3D printed models are a versatile and innovative tool for professionals of all kinds. Whether used for testing and prototyping in design and engineering, displaying products to market them or presenting plans to clients, these physical models offer a level of realism and flexibility that simply cannot be achieved with traditional methods alone. What's more, thanks to the incredible advances in 3D printing technology over recent years, these models can now be produced quickly and with great precision, allowing for a wide range of applications across industries. From concept development to final product launches, the sky is truly the limit when it comes to using 3D printed models.

Proof of concept prototypes

Proof of concept prototypes are essential tools for developing new products and advancing innovation in any field. These functional prototypes help to test the viability of new ideas and provide valuable insights into their pros and cons. By experimenting with different materials, designs, and features, entrepreneurs can gain a deeper understanding of customer needs and develop better solutions that resonate with real-world users. In short, proof of concept prototypes are a must for anyone who wants to succeed in today's competitive business environment. As innovation becomes increasingly reliant on technology and user data, these cutting-edge tools will only become more integral to success in the years to come.

Concept Prototyping

Prototyping a concept is like testing a rocket before taking off. It’s the “canoe” stage – not quite ready for that big adventure but getting there. Prototyping takes the guesswork out of finding what works (and doesn’t work) for people. Life is too short to spend time on bad designs, so we create prototypes to test our ideas. The first prototypes will be cobbled together in a quick and dirty manner, leaving plenty of room for refinement and optimization. For those occasions when an invention idea may have already been planned and formed or the budget for design development and prototyping is restricted, meaning only a single concept is required to move the project onto the next stage of the process, concept prototype design enables you to progress effectively; bringing your invention idea to market in a way that suits you.

Form and Function

Concept design serves to establish the product’s form and function, laying down the foundations for the subsequent stages of engineering or prototyping. Each concept design is displayed in a visually stimulating presentation with associated information and instructional annotations which can then be used to evaluate the designs against each other and also for building a crowdfunding campaign.

A design is conceptual when it only exists as an idea, a sketch, or a model.

Product design describes the process of imagining, creating, and iterating products that solve users’ problems or address specific needs in a given market. The key to successful product design is an understanding of the end-user customer, the person for whom the product is being created. Visualising and conceptualising new products is a delicate matter. It is important to balance many factors including cost, production, and quality. The outcome must be beautiful as well as functional. At Innovolo, we take pride in designing thoughtful products that are in line with our client's goals. With over 19 years of experience and a team of experts, we have the knowledge and creativity to develop your next big idea into a reality.

What is a new product concept?

A new product concept is basically a blueprint for your idea. When developing a new product concept, we can help you to: describe it from your customers’ point of view, list the features and benefits of your product that may appeal to customers, and research and determine your target audience.

Why is concept generation important?

Consumers have a repertoire of brands. If they are currently buying a brand in a specific category, they typically go back to their existing habits. If your product is not unique, your consumer will go back to their favoured brand. This is because there is no difference or significant difference between the new product and the old product.  Effective concept generation allows for the exploration of new ideas that are both novel, commercially successful, and of value to the user. Concept generation is a vital part of the engineering design process.

Why do you recommend product concept designs?

Conceptual product design also serves as a way to explore different manufacturing methods early on in the product development process; providing a range of different value designs for all budgets and requirements, from low cost and mid-range to premium manufacturing.

Important if you have tight deadlines to meet

Development timeframes are getting tighter for new products, and the world needs new products to solve its problems more rapidly. R&D laboratories, product developers and designers, and engineers are under pressure to deliver new products faster, better, and cheaper. Innovolo’s Innovation-as-a-Service can help speed up your R&D projects. The initial results shown in the concepts will boost your confidence in the product idea early on.

How long does it take to get concept sketches done?

R&D teams know the pain of waiting for their designs to be manufactured before they can progress with development. But many years ago, this was not even an issue. Innovolo has developed a prototyping methodology based on rapid sketching and 3D printing. This enables R&D teams to make changes throughout the course of their project quickly and cost-effectively while working closely with manufacturers as if they were a part of their team to accelerate both design and production cycles. This is how we help our clients to bring new products to market faster than ever before.
