Bill of Materials (BOM)

A bill of materials is a complete list of all the items required to build a product. The bill of materials includes the quantity, unit of measure, item number, description, and price of each component. Engineers and manufacturers use the bill of materials to determine the cost of the product and the assembly process. The bill of materials is also used by purchasing departments to procure the necessary components. For example, when a product is designed, the engineer creates a prototype and then establishes a bill of materials based on the prototype. The bill of materials is then sent to the purchasing department, which purchases the components from suppliers. Once the parts are received, the manufacturer assembles the product according to the bill of materials.
