Human Factors Engineering, or HFE, is the study of how people interact with products and systems. HFE specialists take into account the ergonomic and aesthetic factors that influence design in order to create designs that are more user-friendly and prevent user error. HFE intersects with industrial design, UX design, and engineering, and the goal of HFE is to produce designs that better meet the needs of the people who use them. In addition to improving user experiences, HFE can also help prevent injuries. For example, an HFE specialist might redesign a power tool to be more comfortable for the user or add safety features to prevent accidental injuries. By taking into account the human factors that influence design, HFE specialists play an important role in creating safer and more user-friendly products.
